CGMS® System Gold™ - How it Works?

CGMS System Gold
Your healthcare professional introduces the tiny sensor into the skin of your abdomen using an automatic insertion device and an introducer needle that he/she removes immediately. Insertion is quick, like a shot, but is virtually painless. The sensor sits just beneath the skin, and you shouldn't feel it at all. After insertion, the sensor is secured with tape to keep it in place. A wire connects the sensor to the monitor.

You wear the sensor throughout your normal activities for up to 72 hours, and you enter fingerstick blood glucose readings into the monitor for calibration. While wearing the sensor, you can also push buttons on the monitor to mark the time of meals, medication, exercise and any other "events" you may want to recall later. These events show up on the CGMS System graphical output, so you can see exactly where your glucose levels were at those times.

Note: The current version of the CGMS System monitor does not show your glucose values in real-time. Your physician's office must download your data into a computer first.

After up to three days wearing the sensor and monitor, you return to your physician's office, where he/she removes the sensor and downloads the monitor data to a computer. Finally, you can both get a complete look at where your glucose levels were between your tests.

In the illustration below, the dots represent fingerstick readings you might take. But are you certain that four, five or even six fingersticks are enough to get the complete picture of your blood sugar levels? View sample CGMS® System Gold™ data charts below, showing you what you might be missing.
